Former Leeds United, Wolves and Blackburn Rovers defender finds new club after months as free agent

Former Leeds United defender Barry Douglas has returned to football with a move to St Johnstone.

The 35-year-old had been a free agent, having been released by Polish side Lech Poznan in the summer.

He has now returned to the country of his birth, penning a deal running until the end of the Scottish Premiership season.

After putting pen to paper, he said: “It is an exciting time. I am looking forward to the opportunity to come in and try to help the guys develop.

“There is a project here. It is a bit of a transition period with the new manager coming in. I had a look and it is quite a young squad, so I can definitely bring my quality and experience to help everyone develop both on and off the park.

“The hunger is still there, the drive is still there and that is why I am so excited to be here playing my football.”

Douglas made his name in English football with Wolverhampton Wanderers, helping the club seal promotion to the Premier League in 2018.

Despite playing a prominent role at Molineux, he was allowed to depart following their escape from the second tier. He was recruited by Leeds and made 44 appearances over the course of two years, spending his third and final year out on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

A Championship-title winner with Leeds and Wolves, he has added a wealth of experience to the St Johnstone ranks.

If his SFA clearance is granted, he could feature for his new club as early as this weekend. The former Scotland international said: “There is definitely a lot of quality in the squad and I think when we start to work with the new manager and his philosophy, the only way is up really.

“We should have momentum now. The squad will have a lot of belief and positivity.”
