Former York players Ryan Bowman (two) and Jamal Fyfield were on the scoresheet for the hosts, with Danny Johnson, Toby Ajala and Sam Jones also on target.

The Minstermen’s sole reply came from a Richard Brodie penalty in first-half stoppage-time.

Gateshead missed an excellent chance to net in the first minute when Wes York curled wide with only Scott Flinders to beat.

But, after Brodie was denied by a fine Sam Johnson save, the hosts took the lead on 17 minutes when Bowman bundled in after Johnson had rounded Flinders.

The Minstermen went on to draw level in first-half stoppage time as Fyfield was adjudged to have tugged Kaine Felix and Brodie netted.

The hosts, however, were back in front two minutes after the break when Johnson fired past Flinders from 10 yards.

Bowman made it 3-1 on 56 minutes by shooting across Flinders before substitute Ajala charged on to Bowman’s pass to make it 4-1, while Fyfield added a fifth on 80 minutes from three yards after Flinders dropped Paddy McLaughlin’s corner.

Jones rounded off the scoring on 83 minutes, beating Flinders after being played clear by Ajala.
