Huddersfield Town v Oxford United: Terriers set for first test of squad depth

Huddersfield Town go into their first midweek match of the season looking to make their squad depth count against Oxford United.

Three-game weeks are why the Terriers have tried to assemble such a deep squad, and there are already nine in the diary, with more inevitable as the weather, international call-ups and cup weekends take their toll.

Assistant coach Jon Stead says Huddersfield have a difficult balance to strike between finding freshness and causing disruption in a game between two sides who have made unbeaten starts to the League One campaign.

"You need fresh legs, you need to make sure everybody's ready to go," said Stead.

"The recovery's a massive part of that, the pre-season is a long old slog but that's to make sure they can endure these tough weeks when you're going Saturday-Tuesday.

"The lads look in a good place. I thought they looked fitter later on in the game on Saturday.

"When you look at the previous Saturday at MK, a bigger pitch, it was up and down, a bit basketball towards the end of the game but OI thought we looked good on Saturday.

"It's just making sure everybody's ready because I can't stress it enough: we've got a group that's full of quality, it's just about making sure we put them on the pitch at the right time to showcase that."

Huddersfield's first three opponents – Wimbledon, Milton Keynes Dons and Cambridge United – all play quite direct football, but Aaron Ramsey's Oxford are more purist in their approach after relegation from the Championship last season.

"They've got quality all over the pitch," warned Stead. "It's going to be a very different game.

"We can impose our game on them if we're at it in terms of our in-possession (play) and then out of possession we're going to have to be on it because they pose a threat all over the pitch.

"They're very tidy in the middle of the pitch, they can work the sides and they've got threats up top.

"I've been impressed with what I've seen this season."

The Terriers are looking to win promotion in their third season in League One, and defender Murray Wallace says consistency is they key.

"It's what this league is all about, backing up results,” he said. "We go to MK, get a draw, and coming to Cambridge it was important you back up that result with points (they won, 2-1).”
