John Bostock hoping his experience can help Doncaster Rovers

John Bostock showed in the second half of Doncaster Rovers’ 4-1 defeat at Sunderland he can play a role on the field, but he could be even more vital off it as they try to avoid two consecutive League One defeats turning into three at home to Accrington Stanley in midweek.

The 29-year-old midfielder has a lot of experience from a career which saw him debut for Crystal Palace aged 15, move to Tottenham Hotspur at 16, and play in Canada, Belgium, France and Turkey. That could be vital in a young squad.

“I feel like I’ve got an important role to play,” said Bostock, released by Toulouse in the summer and signed by Doncaster last month. “It’s a very young team with a lot of players playing men’s football for the first time consistently at this level. I definitely see a role for me in terms of trying to bring my experience.

“We’ve got Butts (Andy Butler) and other players who’ve played a lot longer than me but in terms of communication and just trying to stay on top of the young players, it’s something I relish doing. I was once in their shoes and I needed that from the pros who were more experienced than me.

“Fleetwood away was a wake-up call and Sunderland was too. Our first-half performance gave us too far to climb in the second half (when he came off the bench).

“When your on the ball stuff’s not going well you have to compensate off the ball and we’ve fallen a bit short.

“When we play our football I don’t believe there’s a team in this league who can match us but we have to play our football and match them on the other side. We’re well aware of that.”
