'They've got to' - Leeds United sent transfer message by ex-Aston Villa CEO as deadline looms

A former Premier League CEO has urged Leeds United to bolster their attack

Leeds United have been urged to recruit another forward before the closure of the summer transfer window.

The window is due to close at 11pm tomorrow (September 1) and the Whites are not blessed with depth at the top end of the pitch.

Joel Piroe and Harry Gray have been loaned to West Ham United and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, leaving Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha as Daniel Farke’s only fit and available forwards.

The latter pair have proven to be shrewd additions for Leeds since their arrivals last year, but former Aston Villa and Everton CEO Keith Wyness is concerned about the depth at Elland Road.

Leeds United sent transfer market message

He told Football Insider: “I've always been a big fan of Dominic when he was at Everton, and I'm pleased that he proved me right with a reasonably good season when he got fit at Leeds.

“However, to have Leeds' season hanging on one hamstring is a little bit risky to me, and they've got to bring in some backup or support as well for that front bit.

“When you get two of your star players injured at the same time, that's what causes runs of form that can lead a club to not perform and gradually drift down to the bottom half of the table.”

Leeds United’s potential

Leeds lack depth in certain areas but have managed to complete some impressive transfer business this summer.

Wyness believes the Whites could even look towards UEFA Conference League qualification if they reinforce their attack.

He said: “Dominic, we know, had a reasonable season injury-wise, but it took a while to get started, if everybody remembers. There is that question mark still there.

“You've got to have more backup, and that's going to be the key for Leeds this season. If they get that position sorted, I think they'll be challenging mid-table, possibly looking for a Conference League place if they do well."
