Wilfried Gnonto latest as Fiorentina claim regarding Leeds United winger emerges

The latest on Wilfried Gnonto amid talk of an exit for the Leeds United winger

Leeds United do not want to let Wilfried Gnonto leave unless they can get a player through the door amid reports of Fiorentina closing in on his signature.

The 22-year-old has made 147 appearances across four years at Elland Road but only played a bit-part role last season.

He was afforded just four Premier League starts and his lack of action fuelled talk of a potential move away from LS11.

German outfit Freiburg were linked with the winger in May and Fiorentina of Gnonto’s native Italy are the latest to have been credited with interest.

Wilfried Gnonto latest

A report on GianlucaDiMarzio.com has claimed Fiorentina have teed up a loan deal containing a buy option for the wideman.

The Yorkshire Post understands an exit for Gnonto is possible, but Leeds do not want to leave themselves short by letting him depart and not getting a new body in. At this stage, nothing is believed to be set in stone.

Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk would arguably be an ideal replacement, although Leeds’ pursuit of the Ukraine international has not been an easy one.

Wilfried Gnonto’s time at Leeds United

Gnonto was a bargain buy for Leeds in 2022, when he was prised from Swiss outfit FC Zurich. Despite initially being earmarked as one for the future, he managed to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

He requested a move in the aftermath of relegation to the Championship and refused to play at one point, only to later back down from his demands.

Gnonto eventually helped the Whites clinch the second-tier title in 2025, although has struggled to be quite as influential as he was in his maiden campaign.

Although it has not been plain-sailing for the Italian, he spoke glowingly of the club while on their pre-season tour of the USA.

He said: “I think, obviously, being at Leeds is a privilege. I have been here for a long time and being in the Premier League as well is a big challenge, so I would say we just have to build on this.

“We did well last season but we want to get even better. Being a part of it is good for me and I try to enjoy every moment.

“It is such a family-oriented, I want to say, club in a way. Everyone makes you feel so comfortable. I came here, I was quite young as well, so everyone just took care of me, whether it was staff, whether it was players and obviously the fans as well.

“So, I would say I feel like I feel proper Leeds now. I just enjoy every single person here, enjoy every moment and hopefully there are going to be many more.”

The transfer window will close at 11pm tomorrow (September 1).
