Jermaine Beckford explains how Leeds United could benefit from a World Cup selection call

Leeds United will benefit from Dominic Calvert-Lewin being left out of England’s World Cup squad, believes ex-Whites marksman Jermaine Beckford.

Calvert-Lewin enjoyed a stellar maiden campaign at Elland Road after joining as a free agent during the last summer window.

He delivered a 15-goal haul across all competitions and was recalled to the England squad after nearly five years away in March. However, the former Everton forward did not make the cut when Thomas Tuchel picked his World Cup squad.

Leeds United’s World Cup benefit explained

Beckford believes Calvert-Lewin will feel fitter and stronger for a period of recuperation, making him a bigger asset to Leeds.

“100 per cent I think this will benefit Leeds, majorly,” Beckford told The Yorkshire Post. “It's disappointing for Dominic on a personal level because it's the World Cup.

“Every player dreams of playing in the FA Cup final or in the World Cup at some point. To be this close but not be able to reach that and achieve that is disappointing for him on a personal level.

“But also, you look at the issues he's had in the past in terms of his injuries, he's gone the full season, I think for the first time in a long time, without any injuries, scoring 15 goals in all competitions. It's a fantastic return, I'm so happy for him.

“But the summer months now, he can use to recuperate and revitalise and reenergise his body, get it back to being super strong.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s new lease of life at Leeds United

Prior to joining Leeds, Calvert-Lewin had endured a turbulent period at Everton. He had been the club’s chief marksman and one of the Premier League’s most revered frontmen, but struggles with injury and form soon came.

Calvert-Lewin has managed to stave off serious injury in West Yorkshire and ended the 2025/26 season with an appearance tally of 39.

“He needs that rest,” said Beckford. “If he was involved in the World Cup, next season kicks off, he's not fully fit.

“He'll be frustrated but for longevity, his playing career, and for the club, I think it will work out in the end for him.”

Jermaine Beckford was speaking To The Yorkshire Post on behalf of Mr Raffle. While clubs benefit from FIFA's World Cup payments, supporters are always looking for ways to get closer to the action.
