Paul Warne provides Rotherham United recruitment update

There is unlikely to be any further incomings at Rotherham United in this transfer window, unless some of Paul Warne’s current squad opt for a move elsewhere.

Midfielder Dan Barlaser is poised to return to the club on a permanent deal from Newcastle United, after making two League Cup appearances for the north east club.

The player has been a long-term target of Warne, after the 23-year-old had enjoyed a fine stint on loan last campaign.

The Millers manager has been keen to find some cover at left-back and would ideally like to sign a deputy right winger for Chiedozie Ogbene.

Although, more new arrivals may only happen if some of Warne’s fringe players depart.

“To be honest I am nowhere in that search. It isn’t a major concern of mine at the minute,” said Warne of bringing in a new left-back.

“I know that Joe Mattock could get injured next week and then there is a drama but Billy Jones played at Birmingham and was excellent.

“It is like a sieve full of water, I can’t hold every single hole and keep the water in, some things I am going to have to let go and a specific cover at left-back isn’t something that I can address.”

He continued: “In an ideal world, I would need to get a couple of bodies out before I can get anybody else in.

“If I could strengthen anywhere, it would be on the right wing. If Chio [Ogbene] gets injured, I don’t have a like for like.”

Warne has spoken to the players at the club who may wish to seek a move elsewhere.

He added: “I have had a conversation with a few of my players to tell them their opportunity here could be limited. You might stay past the window, get into the team and excel. But at this moment in time you are a bit down the pecking order and the pecking order is pretty strong.”
