'I’m buzzing' - Shaun McWilliams snapped up by Cheltenham Town after Rotherham United release
Shaun McWilliams’ new club has been confirmed following his Rotherham United departure
Shaun McWilliams has been snapped up by Cheltenham Town following his departure from Rotherham United.
The 27-year-old arrived at the New York Stadium amid the club’s 2024 recruitment drive, which followed relegation from the Championship.
A strong emphasis was placed upon seasoned operators and McWilliams ticked the experience bill having amassed 228 appearances for Northampton Town.

He appeared on 64 occasions across his two years in South Yorkshire and was unable to keep the Millers afloat in League One last season.
Rotherham had an option to extend his contract when the curtain came down on the 2025/26 campaign, but opted against doing so.
Shaun McWilliams finds new club
He has now been recruited by their new League Two rivals Cheltenham, sealing a free transfer switch to Whaddon Road.
McWilliams said: “I am delighted to be here, I’m buzzing. I had a conversation with the gaffer, and he sold it to me, he was the selling point and made it a no-brainer for me.
“He told me his vision and how he wants to play, it made it an easy decision and I just can’t wait to get going and get on the pitch.”

‘A bit of bite’ added to Cheltenham Town midfield
Robins boss Steve Cotterill added: “I’m really happy to have Shaun here with us. He gives us something different to what we have in midfield, opposing teams won’t enjoy playing against him.
“He has a bit of bite and gets around the pitch well, I look forward to having him as part of our group for the season ahead.”
Rotherham are due to visit Cheltenham on August 15 before hosting Cotterill’s men for the reverse fixturew at the New York Stadium on March 6.
