Sheffield United claim regarding Hull City's ex-Leeds United man Joe Gelhardt emerges

A claim regarding previous Sheffield United interest in a Hull City attacker has emerged

Sheffield United reportedly eyed Joe Gelhardt before he completed a permanent move from Leeds United to Hull City.

The summer transfer window has closed and there was plenty of disappointment at Bramall Lane when the deadline arrived.

Influential playmaker Callum O’Hare had been sold to Wrexham and there was not enough time to get a replacement through the door.

Sheffield United also saw a number of players they were linked with head elsewhere, intensifying the frustration of supporters.

Joe Gelhardt claim emerges

The Star have claimed Gelhardt was of interest to the Blades following the end of his season-long loan at Hull.

The 24-year-old attacker had played a key role in Hull’s promotion-winning Championship campaign, netting 15 goals, but remained out of favour at Leeds.

Sheffield United are said to have been keen on being in the conversation over Gelhardt’s future, but saw him head back to East Yorkshire.

‘Joffy’ would have arguably been a shrewd signing for the Blades and could have potentially been an ideal replacement for the outgoing O’Hare.

However, the former England youth international has been given another chance to shine in the Premier League having previously represented Leeds in the top flight.

Joe Gelhardt on Hull City return

After putting pen to paper on a permanent deal at the MKM Stadium, Gelhardt said: “I’m over the moon. It’s been a great 18 months playing here – I’ve loved every minute of it. Since the season ended, I knew exactly where I wanted to be. Thankfully, it’s happened.

“As soon as I joined the club, I connected with the fans, the staff, all the players. I’m happy to be here on a permanent now, rather than a loan.

“Last season was amazing for everyone involved. A lot of people wrote us off and didn’t believe we could do it. We knew the quality we had and there was such a togetherness at the club.

“I was delighted with the way it happened at Wembley, in the last minute. It was brilliant. Everyone is aware of how much love I have for Hull. Once the owner called, it was always going to be Hull.

“I was buzzing to come back and see everyone. Now we’re in the Premier League, everyone is excited to play against the best and test ourselves.

“Thanks to the fans for their support and the love you have shown me. Here’s to another four years.”
