Watford linked with Sheffield United's Mark McGuinness and ex-Blades defenders Mason Holgate and Tyler Bindon

Watford have been linked with a Sheffield United defender and two ex-Blades loanees

Sheffield United defender Mark McGuinness is reportedly among the players of interest to Watford.

McGuinness joined the Blades in the dying embers of last summer transfer window having started the season with Luton Town in League One.

The move marked a return to the Steel City for the 25-year-old centre-back, who had previously enjoyed a spell on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

He has featured in all three of Sheffield United’s competitive fixtures this season, although could seemingly be the subject of an offer.

Sheffield United defender attracts interest

According to Sky Sports, Sheffield United’s Championship counterparts Watford are exploring a move for the Republic of Ireland international.

They appear keen on strengthening their defence as McGuinness is one of many centre-backs to have been linked with the Hornets.

Also said to be of interest to the club is Nottingham Forest’s Tyler Bindon, who spent last season on loan at Bramall Lane.

Al Gharafa’s Mason Holgate - who was borrowed by Sheffield United in 2023 - has also been named among their potential targets.

Mark McGuinness’ time at Sheffield United

It has not quite worked out for McGuinness at Bramall Lane, but he has previously stood out at second-tier level for Cardiff City.

He may be keen to see if he can breathe life back into his career elsewhere, although Sheffield United are not blessed with depth at the back.

Earlier this year, in an interview with The Yorkshire Post, McGuinness spoke of his desire to reach the Premier League.

He said: “That's (reaching the Premier League) my goal, the ultimate goal. My last couple of moves have been aligned with that.

“That is something I'm still trying to push for. I believe this was the right move and still is the right move for me to get there.

“My drive will always be extremely high until I reach that goal. I take each season as it comes and you can never predict things. Otherwise, we'd all be in the Premier League. I believe this is the right pathway for me.”
