'I just couldn't wait' - Sheffield United prospect Zain Tahir seals Oldham Athletic loan move

Sheffield United have confirmed a fresh loan challenge for a promising young player

Sheffield United prospect Zain Tahir has sealed a season-long loan move to League Two outfit Oldham Athletic.

The 19-year-old, who can operate at centre-back or left-back, has impressed at youth level for the Blades but not yet managed a first-team breakthrough.

He has previously spent time on loan in the National League with Scunthorpe United, for whom he made four appearances.

Tahir has now linked with Oldham after spending time with Micky Mellon’s squad as a trialist in pre-season.

He said: “When I got the chance to come here on the season-long loan, I was delighted and I just couldn't wait to get here.

“I'm really excited, I've obviously spent a week in Scotland with the team and I thought that was a really good experience.

“It's every young player’s dream to get the opportunity to play in the EFL, now that I've achieved that I just can't wait to get started.

“I can't wait to meet the fans and hopefully when we play in front of them they can help us get some really good results.”

‘Character, professionalism and hunger’

Latics boss Mellon added: “We're really pleased to bring Zain to the football club. He's been with us during pre-season, which has given him a great opportunity to settle into the group, understand how we work and show us exactly what he's capable of.

“He's a young defender we've admired and it's been clear from day one that he's got the character, professionalism and hunger to make the most of this opportunity.

“For a young player, it's about finding the right environment to take that next step and we’re able to provide that place for him to continue his development. He's athletic, composed in possession and enjoys defending properly, which are qualities that fit the way we want to play.

“Just as importantly, Zain has a real desire to learn and improve every day. We're delighted to have him with us for the season and we're looking forward to seeing the impact he can make.”
