Sheffield United 'considering' move for Southampton's Ben Brereton Diaz after Derby County loan spell

Sheffield United have been credited with interest in signing an ex-Blades loanee from Southampton

Sheffield United are reportedly considering a move to sign Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz for a third time.

The 27-year-old is no stranger to the Bramall Lane faithful having already had two loan spells with the Blades. He ended the 2023/24 season on loan at Sheffield United from Villareal and then made a temporary switch from Southampton in January 2025.

Derby County borrowed the Chile international for the duration of the 2025/26 campaign and he scored eight goals in 41 appearances for the Rams.

He appears to have remained of interest to Sheffield United, who The Star have claimed are considering a move for the versatile attacker.

Brereton Diaz has been on the books at St Mary’s for two years now, but managed just 15 outings in competitive fixtures.

If Southampton again deem him surplus to requirements, Sheffield United could potentially get him back on board. It is unclear whether or not the Blades would explore a loan deal or look at a permanent arrangement.

Brereton Diaz has plenty of affection for the South Yorkshire club and is well-aware of manager Chris Wilder’s demands.

After making his second move to Bramall Lane in January 2025, the former Blackburn Rovers frontman said: “I'm absolutely buzzing, it is a club I've been at before and really enjoyed and I obviously know the staff and the players that are still here.

“For me personally, with a young family back in Southampton I didn't want to go somewhere else unfamiliar, but most importantly I know what the gaffer and his staff are about and I've been delighted to see the team doing so well this season, for me it was a no brainer to come back.

“The atmosphere last year was tough at times, but I still enjoyed my football and loved every minute of my time at the club, the fans were brilliant, it is a real family club and there is a connection now which is important. No other club was an option for me.

“Coming back to Sheffield United this time I know I will enjoy it more than the first time, the lads have done unbelievably well and I'm just here to hopefully help the team achieve the goal of promotion.”

Brereton Diaz scored 10 goals in 34 appearances across his two stints at Sheffield United.
