Sheffield Wednesday 'interested' in signing ex-Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley man Elliot Lee from Wrexham

Sheffield Wednesday have been credited with interest in a former Doncaster Rovers playmaker

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in signing playmaker Elliot Lee from Wrexham on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old is a modern-day Wrexham hero having starred in their rise from the National League to the Championship.

However, opportunities for the creative midfielder have been increasingly limited of late, largely due to his club’s success.

He ended last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers, scoring three goals in 18 appearances, and could seemingly be heading back to South Yorkshire.

Sheffield Wednesday linked with ex-Doncaster Rovers playmaker

According to Sports Illustrated’s Rich Fay, Lee is set to depart Wrexham as a free agent after agreeing to a mutual termination of his contract.

Wednesday are supposedly among those eyeing a move for the seasoned operator, who spent time at Barnsley during the 2016/17 season.

Posting on X, he said: “Elliot Lee is set to leave Wrexham as a free agent after agreeing to a mutual termination of his contract. Sheffield Wednesday one of the clubs interested in offering him a deal.”

If Lee does depart Wrexham, Wednesday will not be restricted by the 11pm transfer window deadline. Free agents can still be signed beyond that time, although they may need to move swiftly to fend off rival interest.

Not only does Lee boast a wealth of EFL experience, he would provide an injury-plagued Owls squad with some much-needed depth.

Elliott Lee’s Doncaster Rovers spell

Discussing his loan move to Doncaster earlier this year, Lee said: “It's great to be back out there with the boys. I love being out there. I love how the manager wants me to play. He lets me play with freedom, create and just work hard.

“I think I played over 150 games in three years for Wrexham, so I wasn't used to being injured. I think if you ask my missus over the last three months, she's probably sick of me.”
