Exclusive:'Right direction' - Sheffield Wednesday loanee Mason Burstow's Hull City prospects assessed by Phil Brown
Ex-Hull City manager Phil Brown has delivered his verdict on Sheffield Wednesday’s on-loan Tigers man Mason Burstow
Former Hull City boss Phil Brown believes Tigers forward Mason Burstow is “moving in the right direction” following his loan move to Sheffield Wednesday.
Burstow was recruited by Hull in the summer of 2024 after failing to make a first-team breakthrough at Chelsea.
He made 32 appearances for the East Yorkshire club, scoring twice, before spending the 2025/26 season on loan at Bolton Wanderers.

Burstow is now back in League One with Wednesday, looking to make it back-to-back promotions from the third tier. He has plenty of room for growth at just 23 and will undoubtedly have eyes from his parent club on him.
Phil Brown on Mason Burstow
Brown, who led Hull between 2006 and 2010, told The Yorkshire Post: “It’s a massive club, and it’s a good stage, to be fair, for Burstow to go there and maybe rekindle his career, if you want to call it that.
“Coming back to Hull in the Premier League, I don’t know. You can’t just say, well, I’m playing week-in, week-out for Sheffield Wednesday, which is a big club, and then just step into the Premier League. It just doesn’t work that way. But he’s moving in the right direction - that’s the thing.
“He’s gone to a football club to play football, and he’s gone to a football club that’s no mug. It’s massive, and there’s a lot of pressure when you’re playing for Sheffield Wednesday, because I’ll guarantee you they’ll be full houses if they start winning games of football and look like getting promoted.”

Mason Burstow’s start to life at Sheffield Wednesday
Burstow has made six appearances for the Owls and registered his first goal in their recent 7-2 demolition of Bromley.
He is due to spend the rest of the 2026/27 campaign at Hillsborough before returning to Hull and being assessed.
