Nathaniel Chalobah handed Charlton Athletic trial after Sheffield Wednesday training spell

Nathaniel Chalobah has popped up on trial elsewhere after training with Sheffield Wednesday

Nathaniel Chalobah has been training with Sheffield Wednesday - but has now popped up on trial at Charlton Athletic.

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent having seen his Wednesday contract expire at the end of last month. He endured an injury-plagued two years in South Yorkshire, managing just 31 appearances for the Owls.

The midfielder still linked up with Henrik Pedersen’s squad for pre-season training, settting tongues wagging before it transpired he had just been brought in on a training brief. However, the possibility of a new deal was later floated by Pedersen.

He told The Star: “Nate played the last run of games [last season]. Now he has played two games in a row. We are discussing right now what is the next step for the club, and he is one of the players that is interesting to us.”

Nathaniel Chalobah makes Charlton Athletic appearance

As reported by South London Sport, Chalobah appeared for Championship outfit Charlton in their 2-0 friendly win over Colchester Uniuted last night (July 28).

He completed 65 minutes for the Addicks, who were led to a 19th-placed finish in the second tier by Nathan Jones last term.

It remains to be seen whether a contract offer from the London club will materialise, with Chalobah’s options still very much open.

Nathaniel Chalobah’s love for Sheffield Wednesday

The midfielder may not have had the impact he wanted at Hillsborough, but made his love for the Owls clear in a farewell message issued in May.

He said: “As my time at SWFC comes to an end, I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone associated with the club. To all the people that came out every single week home and away to support the boys just shows the passion and love you all have for the club.

“To my guys in the changing room. Dark times from the start but we kept each other going through crazy times, character, resilience, fight but most of all empathy through circumstances we hopefully never have to go through again.

“I just wished I was there more to go through it with you all. To the staff that were able to keep everyone level event though times were tough for you too, thank you for your care. From my family and I (especially my kids who are now die hard Wednesday fans) THANK YOU."
