Joe Wildsmith – at fault for the first goal, though he made a good save later 5

Moses Odubajo – played in a back four and a five 6

Tom Lees – finished the game at centre-forward 6

Chey Dunkley – a header won in the opening seconds set the tone for a good debut. Looks like a centre-back Tony Pulis will like 7

Joost van Aken – little impact on his return to the side 5

Dominic Iorfa – did well as a holding midfielder before dropping into defence, where he ruptured his Achilles – a cruel blow 6

Kadeem Harris – looked good as a second -half centre-forward 7

Callum Paterson – did not contribute enough beyond his long throws 5

Barry Bannan – set up the first half and showed his usual eye for a pass 7

Adam Reach – Wednesday were unable to get him into crossing positions 6

Josh Windass – kept his head to score early 7

Joey Pelupessy (for van Aken, 46) – the much-criticised midfielder brought something in the second half and was unlucky not to equalise 7

Liam Palmer (for Dunkley, 65) – came on to do a job 6

Barnsley

Jack Walton – his hesitancy gave Wednesday the lead 5

Michael Sollbauer – played his part as Barnsley defended well again 6

Aapo Halme – dealt with Windass well – apart from the goal, of course 6

Mads Andersen – Kadeem Harris made his job more difficult in the second half, but Barnsley 6

Callum Brittain – did well down the right and played his part in the winner 7

Alex Mowatt – prompted in midfield 6

Matty James – kept things ticking over rather than imposing himself 6

Callum Styles – a bad second-half miss 6

Dominik Frieser – lively performance capped by a well-taken goal 7

Cauley Woodrow – led the line well and even scored from open play 8

Conor Chaplin – links so well with Woodrow 7
