Sheffield Wednesday transfer latest: Former Barnsley FC striker joins overseas club on loan after 'difficult period'

SHEFFIELD Wednesday outcast Ike Ugbo has joined Cypriot side Apollon Limassol on a season-long loan.

The former Chelsea and Barnsley frontman has been interesting several clubs across the EFL and overseas, with Wednesday having been keen to move on the player, who scored just one goal – in the League Cup – in 24 appearances last term.

He made just six Championship starts in 2025-26 and the signing of Mason Burstow on a season-long loan from Hull City has dropped him further down the pecking order.

Ugbo, who came to prominence at Hillsborough in a productive loan spell in the second half of 2023-24, has netted just one goal apiece in his past two campaigns at the club – and none in the league.

His league drought now extends to 55 games.

The 27-year-old was signed from Troyes on a permanent basis in the summer of 2024 – for a fee in the region of £2.5million, but the goals then dried up for the Canada international.

Sporting director Simon Wilson said: "After a difficult period, Iké asked the club to facilitate a fresh start this summer, with the objective getting back to his best for the benefit of himself and the club.

“We have worked collaboratively together throughout the off season to identify the right opportunity and believe we have secured something we are all happy with. We all go into this next chapter with positivity and optimism, and wish Iké well.”
