Sheffield Wednesday transfer news: Returning favourite brings vital happy memories of League One
Reece James has joined Sheffield Wednesday for a second time looking to win promotion from the third tier for a fourth time.
The left-back was part of the last Owls team to get out of the division, scoring their third goal in the “Miracle of Hillsborough” as they overturned a 4-0 play-off semi-final first-leg deficit to overcome Peterborough United on penalties in 2023. He also played in the dramatic extra-time Wembley win over Barnsley.
That was the final game of the versatile former Doncaster Rovers and Huddersfield Town player's season-long loan, which was made permanent in the summer. However, he made only three Championship starts the following season before moving on to Rotherham United, who released him after a two-year stint.
James' League One credentials are outstanding, having twice won promotion with Wigan Athletic and reached another play-off final with Sunderland.

“I didn't think when I left two years ago that I'd be coming back here being able to wear the shirt again, but obviously I’m absolutely delighted," said the 32-year-old Manchester United youth product, who has been training with the Owls for some time trying to win a contract.
“From the first training session I had here, I was made to feel really welcome. The changing room is a really good changing room, a great group of lads.
“I've been promoted from League One three times, once with Wednesday, and you can try and give whatever wisdom and whatever help you can for the younger players. We all want to push each other as much as we can.”
League One experience will be an important quality for Wednesday this season, and sporting director Simon Wilson pointed to his character as a big draw for a club looking to rebuild after their financial meltdown led to relegation from the Championship.

"In addition to providing cover and balance for the squad, he is a fantastic player for the dressing room and the training pitch," said Wilson.
“Often these players are not the ones who get the limelight, but they play an essential role within the group. Reece has a deep feeling for the club from his past here and he is a perfect fit for what we need right now.”
Despite some bad injury issues at Wigan, James has made nearly 350 senior appearances.
