Shota Arveladze stresses Hull City 'did not park the bus' in backs-to-the-wall draw at Burnley

Even though the possession statistics were weighted way against his side, coach Shota Arveladze was keen to stress Hull City did not "park the bus" in their 1-1 draw at Burnley.

The Tigers had only 23 per cent of the ball but they were effective with it - taking the lead with a wonderful counter-attacking goal scored by Ozan Tufan.

Oscar Estupinan had a shot cleared off the line by Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Regan Slater released substitute Mallik Wilks to shoot at Arijanet Muris from a tight angle.

So while Burnley were the better side despite only finding the net once, through Jay Rodriguez, it was not true to say Hull did not deserve their point.

Arveladze was rightly unapologetic for his approach.

"I imagine the opposite side would say open up more, give us the chance to play more," said the Georgian.

"It's a quality they have to play the ball and play it to the free man with good, twisting strikers. We were looking to block the pockets and make it more dificult for them and get the chance (to score at the other end) to make it more difficult for them. We took it.

"It was a very tough point for us.

"The one time we left the pocket free, they scored a goal."

Not often, but when Hull did counter-attack, they looked dangerous.

"We had our own chances - shots and counter-attacks - we made a goal," pointed out Arveladze. "After 60 minutes we did not really look like we had parked the bus but with the last ten minutes to go we took out our best players (Tufan and Estupinan were substituted in the 76th minute). Vaughny (Vaughan Covil, who replaced Estupinan) is only 19 and we asked him to do the same (job).

"They bring the same level of players in. They brought off (Jay) Rodriguez and brought on Ashley Barnes.

"I want to keep the ball more longer but we have to look at who we play. It's a Premier League side and we have our own strategy sometimes. We couldn't let them have all the space."

The draw came on the back of a 2-1 home win over a Norwich City who saw a similar amount of the ball on Saturday.

"It should help them believe they can compete with the top teams," said Arveladze. "It always helps when whatever you're doing works."

Allahyar Sayyadmanesh went off with a hamstring injury which will have to be assessed but his coach’s instinctive reaction was that he can expect to be without the forward for “five or six weeks”.

"If I have to say all the things I would have expected in the beginning of being in such a very new gelling team, it was this type of night," said Burnley manager Vincent Kompany

"But I can't commend enough how hard my team is working and everytging that goes with it.

"It's a physical league but we're up there.

"I'm taking a lot of joy in watching them work together but the end prioduct is the hardest part of the game.

"Today we created enough chances but we'll have to create as much as we can to get past teams.

"We've just to keep at it. We just need that final menacing shot to go in but the picture you see now of the team is really hard to create. The last part will come."

Arveladze confirmed Birmingham City midfielder Ryan Woods has completed a medical, and he expects the signing to be completed in time for him to make his Tigers debut at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. He does not expect any further signings by then.
