The Latics board ran out of patience at the weekend, relieving Ryan Lowe of his duties after a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Peterborough United.
Lowe was dismissed with Wigan sat 22nd in the League One table, two points adrift of safety.
In a statement, Wigan said: “Wigan Athletic can confirm that they have parted company with Head Coach Ryan Lowe.
“In the interim, Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow will take on first-team matters, and the club will work quickly to identify and appoint a new head coach of the football club. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan for his efforts and wishes him all the best for the future.”
A section of a subsequent statement released by the board read: “We are very aware of and concerned about our current league position, and our full attention is on improving the situation. We believe in this squad of players, and collectively, we know that we are a better team than what our current league position suggests.”
Here are the early BetVictor frontrunners to succeed Lowe as Wigan boss - with some familiar faces featured.
