Jonathan Thomson eager to turn play-off loss into maiden European Tour victory

Jonathan Thomson finished in a tie for second at Made in Denmark event.

Rotherham rookie Jonathan Thomson hailed his play-off defeat in Denmark as a huge '˜step forward' in his bid to retain his playing privileges on the European Tour.

The 22-year-old earned the biggest payday of his career when forcing his way into a four-way play-off at the Made In Denmark event at Silkeborg Ry Golf Club.

A par on the play-off hole was only enough to see him eliminated from contention alongside Lee Westwood, as Matt Wallace went on to win the tournament at the next hole.

But the cheque for 111,853 euros (£100,964) was 10 times bigger than anything he has received during his maiden season on Tour and saw him shoot up the Race to Dubai rankings to 152nd. The top 110 retain their card for next season, with Thomson a little over 100,000 shy of the mark.

With six counting tournaments left, another big week is required if he is to achieve his goal but his efforts in Denmark have at least convinced him he is capable of doing so.

“It was a massive step forward for me and a big move up the rankings,” said Thomson, who has made four cuts in a row.

“If I can keep this kind of form there’s nothing to say a win’s not around the corner.”

The Rotherham Golf Club member opened with a 64 in Denmark and stayed in contention with three further rounds in the 60s.

“I played some great golf, especially coming down the stretch where the pressure’s on,” said Thomson. “From where I have been from the start of the year to now, it’s just phenomenal. I’m just so happy with the week and how I’ve played.”
