The 33-year-old former Scotland A international was the favourite to succeed Alex Codling but has opted to stay with the National One side.

McGee will continue to combine that role with a coaching role at former club Leeds Carnegie, who he began working with earlier this year.

A statement from Wharfedale read: “Wharfedale head coach Tom McGee has committed to the club for next season.

“In the face of speculation, he has announced to the playing squad that, while further developing and expanding his coaching role at Leeds Carnegie, he will continue on the coaching team at Wharfedale.

“The development is welcomed by Wharfedale chairman of rugby, Michael Harrison, who said: “I am delighted that Tommy is staying on board and that his considerable expertise, in whatever capacity, will be available to us next season.””

Rotherham, who are searching for their second head coach in four months following the resignation of Codling due to personal reasons, are hoping to appoint a Yorkshire-based leader for next season’s Championship campaign.
