Rodney Glasgow reflects on his Sharks legacy and why Donovan Clay shines the brightest in Sheffield

Keep your focus on what matters the most - Rodney Glasgow Jr was straight as an arrow when the Sheffield Sharks captain dished out the one lesson he would like to pass onto the next generation of players.

With Sheffield Sharks meeting Leicester Riders in the Super League Basketball play-offs showdown on Friday, Glasgow urged the youngsters to stay focused on their goals despite setbacks. Glasgow stressed the importance of maintaining discipline to ensure that what matters most remains at the forefront of your actions and decisions.

“Don't chase money, if you are not gonna put in the work for it. Because right now we have kids who are doing anything and everything. In search of financial gains, they are losing the real aspect of what life is all about," Glasgow explained.

"Once you know yourself, you are at peace. And you can love doing your job. So no matter how hard it gets, you always keep the main thing, the main thing,” Glasgow added.

Embracing his fourth year in the Steel City, Sharks skipper Glasgow has grown every season as a captain and player at Olympic Legacy Park.

Under his leadership, Atiba Lyons’ men overturned a ten-point first-leg deficit against Cheshire Phoenix to claim an aggregate win by seven in the SLB play-offs.

On the court, Glasgow considers winning the BBL Cup as the defining moment of his Sharks career. Off the court, Glasgow is looking forward to being a doting father as the 32-year-old will welcome his daughter in July.

Already in his ninth year as a professional basketball player, Glasgow faces the challenge of upholding the Sharks' storied legacy in the BBL while managing intense expectations.

“When I became captain, I just wanted to make sure that I stayed myself, because sometimes they give you some pressure like you would have to be something that you are not,” Glasgow said.

“When it comes to legacy, that’s what you signed up for. That’s what the job is. I feel anybody in my position has to embrace it, more than be afraid of it. And I had great support as well,” he added.

Who is Sheffield's best player?

When asked to pick the best player from the Sharks roster, captain Glasgow was quick to give American guard Donovan Clay his flowers.

“Our best player is Donovan Clay. He does so much offensively and defensively. He is very smart. He gets everybody to make the right plays and stuff. Defensively, he can switch out and guard 1-5 which is very rare for a player of his size. You can see the difference whenever he is locked in,” Glasgow concluded.

Clay braved an ankle knock in the playoff clash to post 8 points and 7 rebounds against Phoenix. Sharks registered a 178-171 win on aggregate at home to enter the Super League Basketball Playoffs semi-finals.

Earlier in March, Glasgow guided Sheffield Sharks to a memorable 105-97 win over Surrey 89ers in the SBL Cup final. Ending a nine-year trophy drought at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena, the Sharks sealed their first silverware since the BBL play-off trophy in 2016. Clay emerged as the most valuable player after scoring 23 points in the cup final.
