Bussey injury spoils Featherstone’s day

LAST season’s Championship winners Featherstone coasted to a 15-try win over amateurs Hunslet Old Boys who were making their first appearance at this stage of the competition.

Scrum-half Liam Finn scored two tries, including the 100th of his career, and landed 13 goals, equalling the club’s individual record for goals in a match set by Mark Knapper in 1995.

Ian Hardman bagged four tries and Kyle Briggs a hat-trick as Rovers cut loose.

Old Boys battled well but were never in with a chance of an upset against three-times Challenge Cup winners Rovers, who were 46-6 up at half-time.

The Pennine League side, coached by former Halifax, Warrington and Batley player Daryl Cardiss and Leeds Rhinos hooker Paul McShane, had the consolation of scoring two tries, one in each half.

Captain Stuart Dickens’s ninth minute touchdown put Rovers ahead. Briggs forced his way over from acting half and Tangi Ropati’s excellent run set up a try for Hardman before Jamie Bradley went in for Hunslet’s first score.

Hardman added two more tries, Mufaro Mvududu collected two touchdowns and Dickens grabbed his second as Rovers piled up the points before half-time.

Finn scooted over early in the second period before Hunslet got a look in when Fields plunged over and kicked his second goal of the game.

Rovers rounded things off with further touchdowns from Briggs (two), Hardman, Finn, Tommy Saxton and Jonny Hepworth.

The only disappointment for hosts Featherstone was that young half-back Jack Bussey sustained a suspected fractured cheekbone injury.
