Hull KR forward Rhyse Martin makes retirement call for PNG Chiefs role

Hull KR back-rower Rhyse Martin will bring the curtain down on his playing career at the end of the year after accepting an off-field role with PNG Chiefs.

The 33-year-old is set to join current KR head coach Willie Peters at the NRL's newest franchise in the position of football operations manager.

Martin's decision to hang up his boots comes after winning four trophies in 18 months with the Robins.

Although he did not feature in last year's Challenge Cup final due to injury, the former Leeds Rhinos forward returned to help Rovers complete the treble with double Super League success.

Martin also lifted the World Club Challenge trophy in February after coming off the bench against Brisbane Broncos.

The Papua New Guinea captain, who also won the Challenge Cup with Leeds, is poised to make his final Wembley appearance on Saturday when KR take on Wigan Warriors.

"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of playing professional rugby league and for it to be my life," said Martin, who represented Canterbury Bulldogs in the NRL. "I am so lucky and grateful that I have been able to have the career I’ve had.

"I walk away at the end of the season knowing that I have given everything for each club I've had the honour of representing and hope that I have left the jersey in a better place.

"I look forward to finishing the year strong for Hull KR and giving everything to the team. With it being a World Cup in 2026, it feels like the right time to hang up my boots representing my country at the end of the year.

"Thank you, rugby league."

Martin has made 28 appearances for the Robins since joining from Leeds ahead of the 2025 season.

The 2024 Super League Dream Team member was a key figure for the Rhinos, scoring 40 tries in 132 games.

Hull KR chief executive Paul Lakin said: "Rhyse has been a great signing for us.

"He is someone I’ve often had chats to about future career opportunities.

"And I know he'll do really well in his new career at the end of the season. For now, there's so much more to play for this season."
