Kurt Haggerty sees good signs from Bradford Bulls in hard-fought win over Hull FC

Kurt Haggerty declared himself content with Bradford Bulls' progress after watching his team grind out a 16-14 victory over Hull FC.

Bradford enjoyed a one-man advantage for the final 32 minutes following Yusuf Aydin's red card but were almost taken to golden point by the depleted Black and Whites.

Zak Hardaker's touchline conversion attempt hit the post, however, and the Bulls could celebrate a win that moved them level on points with their visitors in the Super League table.

Asked to sum up his feelings after a close-fought victory, Haggerty replied: "Frustrated, happy, disappointed that we didn’t win some big moments – but we won enough big moments to win the game.

"I'm happy with the result, our resilience and overall try-line defence. I thought restricting territory at times was pretty good and we showed we can score some fantastic tries.

"I didn't feel comfortable at any point. It was a very clunky game. I thought we were toothless with the ball.

"It does a lot for belief. We haven't played well but won; we've had better performances and lost. It's the sign of a good team.

"More bodies will come back. When we look at it on the whole, we're not that far off."

Bradford sit 10th after 11 rounds, above promoted rivals York Knights and Toulouse Olympique, as well as established Super League sides Castleford Tigers and Huddersfield Giants.

The Bulls were indebted to a spectacular finish from Ethan Ryan as he added to Waqa Blake's try, only for the winger to suffer a head knock in the act of scoring.

"He failed his HIA unfortunately," said Haggerty, who will be without Ryan for Sunday's trip to Warrington Wolves but could welcome back Ryan Sutton. "It was a pretty incredible finish.

"I'm gutted for him. I think he's showing he's one of the best finishers in Super League on the wing. He's fantastic."

The result means Hull have now lost to all three promoted clubs, an unwanted record that leaves the Airlie Birds fighting to keep their season alive before the halfway mark.

Andy Last's side sit six points adrift of the play-off positions after a seventh defeat in 11 games.

"I'm really disappointed," said interim boss Last.

"I was confident coming here that we had a good week's practice and had ironed out some issues that had reared their head from the Toulouse game.

"We just didn't start the game well. We made an error on the kick-off. We managed to grind our way back into the game but are just lacking a bit of confidence.

"It's quite obvious to see when you look at the quality of the players we've got sat in the stands. It shows in performance. We're just not where we need to be."

Hull, who like Bradford are without a host of players through injury, were not helped by Aydin's rush of blood.

The forward saw red in the early stages of the second half for a dangerous tip tackle on Caleb Aekins.

"We've got no qualms with the send-off," said Last, whose team crossed through Joe Batchelor and Davy Litten. "It's a brain snap from Yusuf and it's one that has proved costly to the team."
