Yorkshire foundation prosects impress

THREE young showjumpers who are all members of the British Equestrian Federation's North Regional Foundation Squad made it into the top 10 in the Open showjumping competition which was held at Bramham International Horse Trials.

Hayley McCaie, 19, from York finished fourth; Melissa Gair, 18, from Durham was fifth and Nicola Sheard, 24, from Gildersome, was seventh in the 1m 30 competition where they beat competition from leading riders including Geoff Billington and Paul Barker.

The girls' coach Emma White was delighted with their performances.

She said: "To have three riders from this region in the top seven and against such stiff competition is fantastic. It really proves what a wealth of talent we have here and is very exciting."

The Regional Foundation Squads identify and support riders who have shown the potential to progress to international level.

British Eventing's pony selectors have announced a shortlist of nine riders who are in contention for selection for this year's European Championships which are to be held at Bishop Burton College at the end of July.

Among those on the shortlist is Phillipa Hill, 14, from Thirsk, and her pony A Touch of Spice.

The nine riders will attend a training weekend held on June 26-27.

Other riders on the shortlist are: Sophie Beaty, 14, from Northants; Alfie Bradstock, 16, Oxfordshire; Sam Ecroyd, 13, Flintshire; Pumba Goess-Saurau,13, Marlborough, Wiltshire; Sophie How, 15, Northants; Harry Humfrey, 15, Pembrokeshire; Emily Jane Ryder, 15, Perthshire and Grace Walker,13, Wiltshire.
