Chamber selects new president

HARROGATE Chamber of Trade & Commerce has elected a hotel manager as its president for the next year.

Simon Cotton, general manager of the Cedar Court Hotel, succeeds Robert Whiteley, of Yorkshire Event Centre and Pavilions. The decision was made at the chamber's annual general meeting.

Mr Whiteley said: "My greatest aspiration two years ago was that my successor would inherit a bigger, stronger and more thriving chamber than it already was. I can honestly say that the chamber's position has never been stronger. Its level of membership, standing in the community, financial position and status as the only voice for business in Harrogate are better than they have ever been."

Mr Cotton added: "My thanks go to Robert Whiteley as out-going president for his excellent leadership over the past two years. He hands over the Chamber in the healthiest of positions and whilst it will be difficult to match his achievements, it is a challenge that I relish."

The meeting also elected two new vice-presidents: Peter Jesper of The Jespers Office, and Jenny Purdy of DSC chartered accountants and business advisers.

Certificates were presented to past-president Granville Simpson and vice-president David Horth, who stood down after several years' service.
