Mr McKay, boss of precision engineering firm Evenort, based in North Anston, will serve for a year, acting as ambassador for industry.

He said: “I am really looking forward to the year. I am very conscious of the fact that we need to retain our continuity, I shan’t be pushing any one theme but am very keen for us to take an holistic approach.

“What we do has to be relevant to the business context in which we now work but with an eye to the traditions and heritage which are an essential part of the Company.

“I see our education programme as something we will continue to develop and this year, for the first time, we will be leading a trade mission in conjunction with South Yorkshire International Trade Centre.

“We have chosen Alberta, Canada, because representatives have already visited us twice so our trip is reciprocal and we think it will be very worthwhile in terms of contracts as well as contacts.

“They have vast natural resources and we have the skills and expertise to enable them to be utilised. It is a perfect match and I have high hopes that it will bring work to Sheffield City Region.”
