Subway store that had ‘dead mouse’ under sink improves food hygiene rating

A Subway branch in Middlesbrough that previously featured a dead mouse under the sink has improved its food hygiene rating.

Roman Road Subway was slapped with a zero star food hygiene rating in November 2025, in which a scathing report pointed out a plethora of concerns.

Following the re-rating, that took place on April 10, 2026, the establishment found itself with a four star ‘good’ rating – one off the top mark – although a range of issues were raised during this follow-up. These included a number of dirty areas and an order to stop using a chopping board “not capable of being effectively cleaned and disinfected”.

As a result of the November 22 inspection, Middlesbrough Council inspectors were “concerned” to find evidence mice in the eaterie including droppings and a dead mouse in a tray under the sink. The report said the findings “presented a serious risk of contamination”.

Washbasins in both the bathroom and serving area also had no soap, while food and drink was being stored on the floor.

The report added: “There were gaps and holes to the fittings and structure in the premises, creating pest entry points into the premises.” Other imperfections included a leak to the triple sink and “ill fitting” ceiling tiles.

The store was voluntarily shut to undertake the “appropriate remedial works”. A revisit was carried out on December 4, 2025, at which time improvements had been made, and clear pest control reports were provided, the inspection report detailed.

April’s re-rating was relatively successful, with improvements found and the “good” stamp given to the store, while some structural issues were noted. However, it was acknowledged by the inspectors that the shop will undergo a refit in May, at which point a further re-rating inspection can be requested to reflect such changes.

There were still concerns raised in the report, including the storage of non-food items (button batteries) within the branch, presenting a risk of contamination. Additionally, a list of items/areas were described as being “dirty”, including an extraction fan in the toilet and the edges of the chest freezer lid.

The worn green chopping board meanwhile “should be removed from the premises”, and initially, there was no adequate supply of hot water to the washbasin in the food room. Subway was contacted for comment but has not responded at the time of publication.
