Yorkshire wildlife photographer captures birds stocking up for the winter

A wildlife fan has captured pictures of birds searching for food ahead of winter.

Martin Goff wanted to document the different species active at a nature reserve in Leeds.

He says of his pictures taken on October 27: "I was keen to photograph birds who were busy feeding as the weather starts to become colder.

"The colourful jays especially put on a great show stocking up with food ready for winter. I really love the bright iridescent blue on their wings.

"The smaller birds were also out in force and I can never resist photographing a blue tit or a robin, such colourful birds, common maybe but so beautiful.

"Catching birds taking off or in flight is always such a pleasure as the resulting photos give you glimpses of what your eye normally can't discern.

"The frozen wings especially make stunning patterns instead of a blur as they whizz past."

Birds increase their food searching and build up fat reserves in autumn to provide energy and warmth during cold winter nights.
