Teachers and pupils join domestic violence battle

Teachers are using the charity’s materials to work with children of all ages in areas such as tackling gender assumptions, changing ideas, beliefs and attitudes about men and women and conflict resolution.

While the lessons have a serious aim, the content is often fun and sometimes does not even mention domestic violence at all.

Coun Janet Looker, York Council’s cabinet member for education, children and young people, said: “Schools are in a key position to raise the issue of domestic violence in a safe, structured, learning environment.

“I’m particularly pleased that the toolkit includes lesson plans for primary-age children as relationship discussions are important at every age and can help children to seek safety and support if they are involved in a violent environment.”

York is seeking White Ribbon status which recognises its efforts to change attitudes on domestic violence.
