If you are thinking of putting on your walking shoes this autumn, it’s worth paying a visit to the quaint market town of Hawes, which sits at the head of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. Located in the upper valley of the River Ure, Wensleydale is famous for its cheese and its main commercial production operates at Hawes. As well as the chance to sample some delicious cheeses, the area also boasts a wealth of wonderful walks around the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Here are just a few in and around the area that you can try.
1. Hardraw Force
This circular 4.25 mile route from the tourist information centre in Hawes initially follows the Pennine Way before arriving at Hardraw Force, England’s highest above ground waterfall, and travelling back to the start point via the village of Sedbusk. Photo: Shutterstock
2. Aysgarth Falls
Starting at Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre, just a short distance from Hawes, this short circular walk travels through woodland and pasture fields, before arriving at the triple flight of waterfalls by the River Ure. Photo: Shutterstock
3. Aysgarth Falls and West Burton Falls
If you want to take on a longer, more challenging walk, this 7.5 mile route near Hawes is ideal and follows a circular loop which takes in waterfalls, hills, fields and woodland along the way. Photo: Shutterstock
4. Keld and the upper Swaledale waterfalls
Starting in the village of Keld, not far from Hawes, this picturesque route is just short of three miles in length and follows a loop around some of the best waterfalls surrounding the River Swale, including Kisdon Force. Photo: Shutterstock
