ARTISTS who vie against each other every year to be selected in a Christmas card competition have been proudly showing off the pictures chosen for a hospice’s annual fundraising effort.

Members of the Hallam Art Group are asked each autumn to produce a painting which could be used by Sheffield’s St Luke’s Hospice for its popular series of Christmas cards.

This year, five works have been selected, including a picture of Foolow village in the Peak District by retired tailor Maurice Sillitoe, and a painting of the city’s Botanical Gardens by Mike Green.

Mr Sillitoe, of Fulwood, Sheffield, has been a member of the group for more than 20 years. He said his work had been selected several times before, but added he was still “honoured” to have been chosen to provide a picture for 2010.

Other scenes on the cards include Peter Holland’s view of carollers in Castleton, Malcolm White’s frosty horse troughs in the Mayfield Valley and Isabel Blincow’s bridle path at Forge Dam.

The hospice said it had also persuaded celebrated South Yorkshire artist Bill Kirby to provide a view of Timpson’s Corner, a popular city centre meeting place, back in the days of the original Sheffield trams.

The cards, which cost 50p each, are available either through the hospice or its seven charity shops.
