Country house gardens scoop gold

It has been described as “the perfect English house” - and now its magnificent gardens have been given the highest accolade by Yorkshire in Bloom.

The voluntary organisation, that administers the Britain in Bloom campaign in the Yorkshire region, judged Burton Agnes’s gardens during the summer under the ‘Country houses, estates and parks & gardens’ category.

The judges unanimously agreed that the gardens should be given a gold award.

The Elizabethan walled garden offers over three thousand plant species, a potager filled with herbs, fruit and vegetables, herbaceous borders, giant board games, a maze, a jungle garden and a national collection of campanulas.

Owner Simon Cunliffe-Lister said: “I feel thrilled that our gardens have been recognised by Yorkshire in Bloom.

“Jeremy Palmer and his team of gardeners work with huge enthusiasm to maintain the beauty and interest of the gardens.

“This Yorkshire in Bloom gold award follows the Gold awarded for our magnificent display of streptocarpus at the Driffield Show, so we have plenty to celebrate.”
