'Think of the effects' - Family share message for drivers after death of young man

The family of a teenager who died in a crash in Yorkshire have shared a message to drivers after a young man was jailed for his involvement.

On Tuesday (May 19), 23-year-old Hamza Hussain was jailed for causing the death of his friend Mohammed Waheed in 2024.

Hussain was driving a powerful car - his friend’s VW Golf F vehicle - at speed when he lost control at the Bramall Lane roundabout in Sheffield.

He left two of his injured friends - 18-year-old Mohammed Waheed and a 15-year-old boy - and ran away from the scene.

Mohammed died in hospital two days later after suffering catastrophic head injuries in the crash.

Hussain was jailed for five years and four months, and now Mohammed’s family have issued a plea to drivers.

In a statement released through South Yorkshire Police, they said: “You may be enjoying the moment, but think of the effects it can have, the long term damage on those left behind without their loved one.

“No length of sentence will bring Mohammed back, but we hope that other drivers can see how two lives have been destroyed; Mohammed lost his life and Hamza’s will be forever changed.

“We want young drivers to understand that a moment of joy can take away a life and the impact it has on families is forever and has a rippling effect across us all and the wider circles of friendships and communities.

“Remember Mohammed, remember the ultimate price someone’s actions cost him.”

During the court hearing, his family’s victim impact statement was read out, which said: “Every day feels like a bad dream we can’t wake up from, it feels impossible to accept this has really happened.

“Losing Mohammed has changed our lives, and while we grieve his loss, we also grieve his future that he will now never live.”
