Criticism overpub lunchesfor pupils

A PUB has been criticised for encouraging schoolchildren to come in on their lunch break.

The Pelican in east Hull has converted its games room into a snack bar for pupils between noon and 1pm.

Chalked up on a blackboard outside the pub is “Jack’s School Menu” featuring pizza, garlic bread and fries and to get in the children have to use the same entrance used by regulars.

Before opening last week, pub staff visited Malet Lambert School with flyers to target the children.

Headteacher Jane Dyer said: “I am surprised and disappointed that a pub would encourage our students to go there at lunchtime. Not only do I disapprove of students being actively encouraged to enter a pub during the school day, but also the menu available does not give them a healthy option.”

Mrs Dyer said children were encouraged to stay on site where they could eat a healthy lunch.

The owners of Jack’s are operating within the law because the diner is only open to children between noon and 1pm, before alcohol is served on the premises from 2pm onwards.

The pub’s landlord Philip Hoggard, and the owner of the franchise, Lee Walker, have defended their actions. Mr Hoggard, who took over the pub 15 months ago, said the pub was at the heart of the community. He said: “The children are not allowed in the drinking area; they are only allowed in the separate restaurant.”

Franchise owner Mr Walker said: “We thought about having a serving hatch, but then they would be on the streets where they can cause trouble and litter. There is no alcohol on sale so there is nothing that can entice kids to alcohol.”
