‘Freedom riders’ rally against cuts

FREEDOM Riders who pledged to keep using their free travel passes despite a concessionary scheme ending mounted a 150-strong protest at Barnsley Railway Station.

Campaigners, rallied by Barnsley Retirees Action Group (BRAG) have now taken part in five ‘Freedom Rides’ in protest at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) cutting concessionary travel for older people and the disabled.

Yesterday, 150 met at Barnsley station, intending on travelling to Meadowhall, but were stopped from getting on a train. Instead they travelled to Penistone where they met up with campaigners from across Sheffield.

SYPTE said the “regrettable” cuts bring South Yorkshire in line with nationally funded schemes.
