Large crowds greet The Queen on Derbyshire visit


Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen made her first official visit to Matlock, the county town, in 22 years.
Their itinerary included a visit to knitwear firm John Smedley Ltd’s factory in Lea Mills to mark its 230th anniversary and Chatsworth House stately home.

Hide AdShe was greeted at Chatsworth House in the Derbyshire Dales by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.


It was one of numerous visits that the Queen has made over the years to the famous stately home, which has been the seat of the Cavendish family since 1549.
After meeting staff and seeing restoration work, the Queen and Philip chatted with people who take part in mountain and dog search and rescue and also cave rescue operations.
They were presented to Peak District Park Rangers and air ambulance crew and some 80 members of Derbyshire voluntary and charity organisations before enjoying a private luncheon.
