Leisure centre gets £6m upgrade

SWIMMERS and gym users will be able to pick up a book or see their GP after a £6 million revamp of one of the country’s most visited leisure centres.

Work on Haltemprice Leisure Centre, which gets more than 1.1m visitors a year, is due to start in the spring after councillors approved the plans, which bring together a number of services under one roof.

Two new extensions are being built - one to house Anlaby Surgery and offices - with a larger one at the front for Anlaby Library, council customer services centre and a new kitchen and servery. Upstairs will be an extended tone zone.

Centre users will be able to use the library for much longer than before - from 7.30am in the morning to 11pm on weekdays.

The building, and plant and equipment for the pool is having a complete overhaul, with a new roof, extra insulation and sensors for heating and lights installed to cut bills.

The pool will have to close next September for up to six months. The project itself is due to be finished in autumn 2014.

Outdoor pitches will be refurbished and extra parking spaces will be created.

Council leader Steve Parnaby said: “The refurbishment of Haltemprice Leisure Centre is an exciting project and highlights this authority’s commitment to providing first class services for the benefit of our residents and for visitors to the East Riding.

“By providing a number of facilities under one roof, the council aims to improve services while at the same time lowering costs. The plans received positive feedback at a recent public exhibition.”

A spokesperson for Anlaby Surgery said: “This is really welcome news.

“Haltemprice Leisure Centre is already a popular venue and the new build will be more accessible to our patients and will be able to offer an increased range of services to improve and expand health care provision in the Anlaby area.”
