Model worker is still ‘on top of the market’ after 50 years

He HAS already turned 90 and has been doing his job for 50 years – but Roland Sherwood is still turning up for work.

Mr Sherwood bought his shop in Cross Gates Road, Leeds, in 1955, and today he still goes in five days a week.

He said: “I’ve had good luck, I’ve kept on working, but above all I’ve been well fed by my wife Elsie – I think that’s the most important thing.”

After he bought the shop, Mr Sherwood originally ran it as a newsagents and tobacconists.

Since the 1980s, however, The Model Shop has sold model planes, helicopters and boats and the specialist retail outlet is now run by Mr Sherwood’s son, Martin.

Family, friends and work colleagues recently held a surprise party for Mr Sherwood at the shop he has worked in for more than half-a-century.

Mr Sherwood’s daughter, Sue Cliff, said: “I think his secret is having an interest – it’s great to have a reason to get out of bed on a morning and to work with like-minded people. Every day is a fresh challenge.”

Andrew Fernie, an employee at the shop, praised Mr Sherwood’s work ethic and knowledge of the business.

“He still comes in and has a section which he looks after.

“He still has a grasp of the market, too – he knows what people want,” added Mr Fernie.
