Yash Pal Buttoo, Paul to his friends, had arrived in the West Riding with just a few pounds in his pocket but soon found work in a local biscuit factory and then as a bus conductor.

It wasn’t long before he started his own business, which occupied a prominent position on Harrison Road, near the former magistrates’ court.

Eventually it expanded into the high-end fashion sector, with retailers and labels such as H&M, Next and Paul Smith among its clients.

Mr Buttoo was also a school governor and a prominent member of the Rotary Club.

He lived for 40 years in the Savile Park district of Halifax, with his wife, Nilam.

She died four years ago, and he is survived by four children and five grandchildren.
