'I can't wait' - Sheffield's new deputy Lord Mayor 'hugely honoured' after taking up role

Sheffield’s new Deputy Lord Mayor said that he is “really honoured” to be chosen for the job.

Ecclesall ward councillor Peter Gilbert is only the second Green on Sheffield City Council to take on the role. It also means he will take over as Lord Mayor next year, following on from Coun Andrew Sangar.

Both councillors were elected unopposed to their civic roles at the council’s annual meeting on Thursday (May 21).

The city’s first Green Party Lord Mayor was Magid Magid in 2018-19.

Coun Gilbert said: “I’m really honoured to have the opportunity to be the city’s deputy Lord Mayor for this year, which will lead into me being the Lord Mayor in ’27 to ’28.

“It’s a huge honour, not something that I saw coming into my life, but something that I’m really looking forward to doing.

“I know it’s going to be a lot of work but I think it’ll probably be so rewarding. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Coun Gilbert was elected on to the council in Ecclesall ward in 2024. He has just taken over as co-chair of the authority’s licensing committee.

As Deputy Lord Mayor, Coun Gilbert will attend some of the functions and events that the city’s civic leaders are invited to during their terms of office.

New Lord Mayor Coun Sangar is now the longest-serving Sheffield councillor. He and his wife, Lady Mayoress Sue Alston, both represent Fulwood ward for the LibDems.

They are the first husband and wife councillors to take on the mayoralty since Coun Denise Fox was Lord Mayor in 2016-17 and just-retired councillor Terry Fox was her consort.
