Sports Minister attacks Tour funds shortfall

THE Sports Minister has launched another attack on Yorkshire’s successful Tour de France bid – this time for failing to make clear how the policing would be funded.

Hugh Robertson told MPs it was “extraordinary” that tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire had made a bid for one of the world’s biggest sporting events without first ascertaining how the event security would be paid for.

North Yorkshire police commissioner Julia Mulligan revealed this week she expects to be left with a £500,000 bill following the Grand Départ, and attacked the “lack of clarity” over policing costs.
