Transpennine route upgrade: trains cancelled and rerouted from Dewsbury and Huddersfield to Leeds

The Transpennine Route Upgrade will eventually cut journey times between York and Leeds by 10 minutes, and Manchester and Leeds down to 42 minutes.

An important section of the Transpennine Route Upgrade between Leeds and Huddersfield has been completed, Network Rail has said, however more cancellations are on their way.

This is part of an overall upgraded route that will eventually cut journey times between York and Leeds by 10 minutes, and Manchester and Leeds down to 42 minutes.

The £11bn project, funded by the Government, is the second-biggest piece of infrastructure work in the UK after HS2, and is set to be completed in the early 2030s.

The latest section of work between Leeds and Huddersfield saw almost four miles of track replaced, platform remodelling and construction of two new bridges.

Sophie Leishman, TRU sponsor, said: “Thanks to the hard work of our teams and the support from customers and local communities, this 24-day line closure has been a huge success.

“We made great strides in the upgrades of Huddersfield and Deighton stations, and made significant improvements to the railway between Huddersfield and Leeds.

“Across the programme, we are well on track with delivering a more reliable, electrified railway across the Pennines, with journey times reduced and capacity increased.”

Next up is work around Dewsbury and Batley, with track replaced and station upgrades, which will see another raft of closures.
