Woodhead Pass to remain closed all weekend after moorland fire sparked by car blaze

The A628 Woodhead Pass will remain shut in both directions throughout the weekend as emergency services continue tackling a major moorland fire.

The A628 Woodhead Pass will remain closed in both directions until Monday (Jul 20) following a moorland fire sparked by a car blaze.

The key trans-Pennine route between the A57 at Hollingworth and the A616 at Flouch was closed at around 2.30pm on Thursday (Jul 16) after a car caught fire and the flames spread to nearby moorland.

A multi-agency response involving Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, National Highways and South Yorkshire Police has been ongoing since the incident began.

National Highways has confirmed the road will remain closed throughout the weekend and is not expected to reopen until at least Monday morning due to the ongoing wildfire, as well as another unrelated fire at Tintwistle.

Drivers are being diverted via local routes, while those travelling further afield are being advised to use alternative trans-Pennine routes, including the M1, M62 and M60.

Motorists are urged to allow extra time for their journeys, plan ahead and consider delaying travel if the closure is likely to affect their route.

National Highways said further updates will be provided through its regional social media channels and via its 24-hour contact centre.
