UK takes tough lineover mackerel war

The Government has challenged Iceland and the Faroe Islands to back down in a fishing row dubbed the "mackerel war".

In the absence of a fish quota deal with the European Union, Iceland and the Faroes declared they would massively increase the amount they will catch by between three and six times, which could be disastrous for the Scottish fishing industry and conservation. It has triggered calls for the EU to intervene.
