Wild about blue-carpeted woodland

Ranger Kelly Brindley in Wombwell Wood, near Barnsley, which has been named one of the top 10 places on the Forestry Commission estate in England to see bluebells.

A vivid blue carpet has sprung up in the 362-acre woodland, which is famed for its gnarled old oaks and is a haven for wildlife.

Other beauty spots in the top 10 include Grizedale Forest, east of Coniston Water in the Lake District and the New Forest in Hampshire.

Forestry Commission forester Helen Walton said: “Wombwell Wood is joyful place to visit in the spring and important for its wild flowers, like bluebells.”
