Woman tells of life after Legionnaires' disease: 'I've been told I may never get much better'
A BRITISH woman who ended up in intensive care after contracting Legionnaires’ disease on holiday in Crete says she still feels “completely shattered” and often unable to get out of bed a year on.
Donna Jobling, 58, from Hull, says her husband has become effectively her carer since she fell ill during an easyJet holiday last June at the Sergios Hotel in Hersinissos.
She was placed in an induced coma at the island’s Venizeleio Hospital and then spent weeks in hospital in the UK where she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder which often follows a viral or bacterial infection.
Mrs Jobling said she fears she will never fully recover, and says husband Sid has to help her wash, provide her meals, and on the rare occasions she does go out, push her in a wheelchair. She said: “My life has been totally changed, as it has for my husband Sid who I feel so sorry for as he has to do everything for me now and is effectively my carer.

“I’m determined to stay positive and do all I can to get better, but it has been such slow progress that I do get frustrated and angry.
“Many days I simply can’t lift my legs to be able to get out of bed and I am just completely shattered. I’ve been told I may never get much better. It’s so difficult.”
Hudgell Solicitors, which is representing Mrs Jobling and another woman in a legal claim against easyJet, said the operator was paying for regular physiotherapy sessions for Mrs Jobling. However they are yet to agree to providing occupational therapy support, or accept liability for her catching the disease at the hotel.
In a statement, easyJet Holidays said they were sorry Mrs Jobling remains ill. They said they’d funded an initial course of rehabilitation and have have been exploring further ways to assist her.
It added: "As this is an ongoing legal matter, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. We hope the matter is resolved swiftly through the appropriate legal process."
